Watch: Consuming Kids

Read:

  • (Or re-read, as it were) M.T. Anderson's Feed with an eye toward what the author's critique of contemporary culture is (especially as it relates to the themes of this class).
    • As you read, collaborate here to design a set of text-based questions that will guide (your future) students' reading and understanding of this aspect of Anderson's dystopic novel. Feel free to revise existing questions crafted by your colleagues or add new ones. The final product should be one unified "Handout" that you could imagine actually distributing to (let's say upper level high school) students and will be evaluated (with a "group grade") as such.
    • Each class member is expected to contribute equally and will be evaluated accordingly.
  • NAMLE Core Principles of Media Literacy Education and have a sense of how these compare with ITSE's NETS-S and NCTE/IRA's ELA Standards (see Sept 19 assignment). Be prepared to discuss (the NAMLE document) in class.
  • Skim:
    • Henry Jenkins, et. al., Confronting the Challenges of Participatory Culture: Media Education for the 21st Century (The John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation Reports on Digital Media and Learning) (free download for Kindle; or pdf).

These last two documents may help you formulate some questions for your "Feed Handout."

Write:
  • ONE blog post (following criteria for Sept 26 assignment)
  • Complete this Webquest., skipping the page about Google Docs (just "click through" by clicking the link in the center of that page that says "Click HERE to get started on the feedwebquest!").
    • Create and save the "Google Doc" you create for your responses in your Shared folder for ENG 506. Have reviewed your classmates' responses before class on Monday.
  • A "response paper" (2 pgs max) that compares the the film, Consuming Kids, to the novel, Feed (bring hard copy to class).
  • Read the Collaborative Notes on Course Final Project and have contributed your input by class time on Monday.

Connect, share, and comment:

NOTE: I WILL be filling out the remainder of the course calendar based on our discussion in class last week and your responses (or lack thereof, as it were) to what you would like to do for the remainder of the course. If you have anything that you will want me to consider as I finalize our plan, please either email me or add it (asap) to the Google Doc that I set up for this purpose.
